Dee Titel

Fridays, 6PM

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Dee got her first taste of local radio djing at 91.7 WSUM Madison. Her career as a Food Scientist brought her to Chicago and the plethora of live music in the city never ceases to amaze her. Dee’s musical expertise resides mainly with the funk, but she also has a sweet spot for European electronic and gospel Sundays. During the week she can be found in the airport traveling the country for work, while weekends include concerts, hanging in Noble Square, and lots of booze.

New Music Mondays News

Chicago’s Pritzker Pavilion isn’t just for symphonies and jazz. Downtown Sound’s New Music Mondays just finished its second successful summer, bringing something a little different to Millennium Park. The series, sponsored by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, brought a new and younger audience to concerts in the park with bands like The Books, Konono No.1 and The Thermals. CHIRP reporters Erin Wethern and Erica Schwanke bring us the sound of New Music Mondays. Read more…

Race and Visual Imagery Split Reel

It’s long been said that perception becomes reality, and for much of our nation’s history, mass media has not been kind to minorities — in particular, the African-American community. From Birth of a Nation (where the Ku Klux Klan were portrayed as crusading heroes) to the bumbling, shiftless TV characters of Mantan Moreland and Stepin Fetchit, early film and television did much to portray black America as an underclass deserving of pity and ridicule. But images were also used as weapons to advance the cause of civil rights, as evidenced by the power of photos of the horrifically-beaten Emmit Till to news coverage of Martin Luther King Jr.‘s “I Have a Dream” speech in D.C. New Library Additons

Every week we do our best to add a wide range of music to our library, from the newest local releases to lost gems from the archives. Here’s a list of what we’ve recently added.

  • Out Hud S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D. (kranky)
The instrumental debut full-length from electronic dance-rock band Out Hud, full of dub grooves, experimental orchestration with strings and synth, and copious amounts of face-rocking, was a landmark album for the Brooklyn music scene. Just six songs long, the album is 38 minutes of cool dance anarchy. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more fun album.
  • Cannonball Adderley Somethin’ Else (Blue Note)
Shortlisted by many as one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, Somethin’ Else is a 1958 release by saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, his first on Blue Note. With contributions from Miles Davis, it is a seminal bebop, hard bop and cool jazz record — the operative word being “cool”: there are moments on Somethin’ Else that can transport you instantly to a smoky 1950s jazz club.
  • Smith Westerns Smith Westerns (HoZac)
A meditation in fuzzy lo-fi recording techniques, inspired pop rock composition, and guttural anthems, this debut from Chicago’s young garage rockers could fit comfortably in a disc changer alongside The Willowz, Happy Birthday, The White Stripes and John Bellows.
  • Unwound New Plastic Ideas (Kill Rock Stars)
The second album by Kill Rock Stars noise rock band Unwound offers a more cohesive feel than the debut, while still displaying dark, distorted, dissonant rock gems. New Plastic Ideas displays a clearer indication of what the band would become, a kind of burning intensity with even stronger song structure.
  • Pylon Gyrate Plus (DFA)
This 2007 remaster of 1980’s Gyrate by influential Athens, GA New Wave band Pylon is equal parts dance, rock and new wave without the quirk — a sound more akin to artists working today than its contemporaries.
