- Chicago Underground Duo Boca Negra (Thrill Jockey)
Delicate and melodic arrangements from this local avant-garde collaboration between Rob Mazurek on horn and Chad Taylor on percussion. Their fantastic February performance at the Hideout increased my appreciation for this record ten-fold.
- Jack Rose Luck In The Valley (Thrill Jockey)
An unfortunately posthumous release from a true guitar master.
- Julianna Barwick Florine (Florid)
Haunting, intense and simultaneously soothing songs from this New York-based chanteuse. Florine has been out for awhile now, but with each new listen the record becomes more and more captivating.
- Joanna Newsom Have One On Me (Drag City)
The chatter surrounding Newsom’s triple album is well-deserved. Definitely set aside an afternoon to sit down with this one.
- Bird Show Band Bird Show Band (Amish)
Former CHIRP music director Michael Ardaiolo describes parts of this record as a “wonderfully raveled mess” and I couldn’t agree more. Ben Vida is joined on these out-there soundscapes by some of Chicago’s top proverbial brass: Josh Abrams, Jim Baker, Dan Bitney and John Herndon.
